The Cool to be Curious project is a collaboration between Putney High School and Roehampton University, aimed at raising aspirations of Year 5 pupils through the provision of creative, unique and inspiring workshops that will challenge their mindset and stretch their understanding, over two years until they leave primary school in Year 6.

As part of our outreach programme, our Cool to be Curious collaboration this term involved a double session on dance and drama with two local school groups being supported by Putney’s Year 11 mentors.

In the first session Mrs Armstrong worked with the children on movement using passages from the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

The second session revolved around dance, led by specialist Roehampton dance teachers. The pupils listened to four different pieces – two modern and two classical before coming up with individual written words to describe each piece.

They picked one of the pieces and attributed a physical movement to each word, to make up their own dance.

“There was a real buzz around the drama and dance sessions today.  The Putney High students are amazing at helping the children and you could see the children grow in confidence as the session went on.

The whole Cool to be Curious programme has given the children a chance to expand their horizons, try something new, work with other children and of course have fun!  Thank you”

And this is what some of the local children had to say…

“I like the variety of activities. It was fun to do the movement and physically move around and meet more people”.

“The Putney mentors really made me feel comfortable. They give us good support and advice and make us feel happy.”

Well done to everyone who took part.
