We create a ‘can-do’ attitude in our girls, where the desire to strive takes them beyond what they believed they could achieve.

Girls are taught a growth mindset, where embracing challenges, developing grit, making mistakes and the process of learning is fulfilling in itself. How they learn is as important as what they learn.

The education we provide here is the first step in preparing your daughter for life beyond school, and equipping her with not only the learned skills, but with the good judgement, kindness, self-awareness and sense of collaboration that will help her to achieve.

She will learn the skills to question and to work hard, gaining the  confidence to become a proactive and responsible member of the community.

Learning is essential, but the quality of a girl’s school life is what enables her to flourish.

Reception (ages 4 & 5)

Our Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum encompasses seven Areas of Learning. This includes three ‘prime’ areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

As well as four ‘specific’ areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Girls also have the benefit of specialist teaching in Physical Development, Music and French, and the opportunity to perform in the Reception nativity production at the end of their first term.

At the start of lessons, Early Years class teachers focus on a specific area of learning within a subject area. Pupils then take part in a focused activity, led by an adult, which aims to put a key skill in action.

During the Autumn term, there is an emphasis on PSED where girls learn to play together, to share, make friends and develop the skills they need for the rest of their lives.

As the year progresses, they begin to prepare for Year 1, adopting the skills they will use as part of a more formal approach to classroom learning.

Key Stage 1 (ages 5–7)

In Years 1 and 2, pupils build strong foundations in English and Mathematics. Right from the start, pupils become fully involved in their own learning, evaluating their work and taking increasing responsibility in achieving personal targets.

Each class teacher, supported by a teaching assistant, introduces cross-curricular lessons, making connections across all subjects. This introduces the idea that all learning is connected and can be researched further, expanding each girls’ horizons and encouraging her to develop independent learning skills.

Classroom learning is complemented by a rich programme of external visitor sessions and workshops, as well as lessons from subject specialists in Modern Languages, Music, Computing, Swimming and PE, as well as dedicated lessons using our Junior School library. In Year 2, girls work towards their English Speaking Board examinations, a national qualification focused on communication skills.

Key Stage 2 (ages 7–11)

In Years 3 to 6, your daughter will start to benefit from a broader ranger of teaching styles, delivered by both their class teacher, as well as an increasing number of other staff and specialist teachers across Music, Computing, Languages, and PE. In this way, she is able to take advantage of the talents, passion and skills of a variety of teachers and be prepared for the routines of Senior School. There is also an increased development of independent skills and positions of responsibility.

Girls in Years 4 to 6 make use of individual iPads to support their learning and to offer opportunity for personal extension. From Year 3, girls study Science in our Science Laboratory and deepen their scientific understanding through specialist teaching.

Regular class trips, workshops and visits from external experts broaden and enhance the Putney curriculum, alongside residential trips in Years 4 to 6 which present fresh challenges and promote independence.

Oracy & Debating

Our girls are highly accomplished communicators and are offered further opportunities to shine and to gain formal confirmation of their skills.

Every girl, from Reception to Year 6, is encouraged to embrace language skills, to present their ideas coherently and to take part in reasoned discussions and debates.

In Year 4 girls take their English Speaking Board (ESB) examinations and in Year 6 participate in the Speaking and Listening element of the curriculum, developing their critical skills and higher order thinking.

Opportunities to take part in MUNGA, Model United Nations Assembly are just one of the many ways that pupils are encouraged to present and share their views.
