A Day in the Life of a Sixth Former – Annie

Alumnae, Careers, Celebration, Interview, News, Sixth Form, STEAM, STEM

Annie studied A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths and leaves Putney to attend McGill University in Canada where she will study Mathematics.

I enjoy exploring different ways of approaching a problem so I take part in Mathletes club which involves mental maths and helping out younger year groups. I find that really fulfilling.

I joined Putney in Year 10, just before COVID and although everyone was very welcoming I don’t think I had a solid friend group until Year 12. Now, without doubt, my friends are going to be the thing I miss most when I leave.

The biggest difference between GCSE and A Levels at Putney is the depth in which you explore your subjects and the more informal relationship with the teachers. You can tell they really enjoy the more challenging material. We have discussions that can go on to things that are really complex and the teachers are really approachable, for instance if there is content that you don’t understand or need help with.

Last year I did Biology Futures which examined how Biology is impacted by current affairs. We looked at a study into bats and their hearing, and one on gene sequencing. Putney has definitely nurtured parts of myself that I didn’t know I had and given me key social and study skills that I am certain to draw on in the next phases of my life.

Next year I plan on attending McGill university which is in Montreal, Canada. The application process is very different to UCAS – less about final grades and more about showing that you’re a well-rounded student. The US and Canadian specialist at Putney was really helpful in helping me to structure that.

The Sixth Form is special because you have your own dedicated area with so many people around encouraging you to join in. I have enjoyed being able to use the Fitness suite and done a lot of tennis, debating and drama. As a sixth former, it’s very easy to set up a club if there’s something you’re particularly interested in.
