Putney High gained a new national champion on the first weekend of the Christmas holiday when Florence G won the Year 10 Girls event at the British Rowing Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Flo covered 1370 metres in five minutes, finishing nine metres ahead of her nearest competitior, in a conference hall full of Concept 2 rowing machines at the National Exhibition Centre.
An athlete from Lady Eleanor Holles School set the time to beat when she completed her race a few minutes earlier.
“My Dad told me her score before the race so I knew what I had to beat,” said Flo.
“It was quite close for the first three minutes between me and the girl next to me, who ended up coming third overall.”
Flo was back in Putney for Year 10 holiday training on Monday morning.
Year 10 lead coach Martin Gough said: “Flo paced her race really maturely. We knew she could be in the medals from her work so far this year but her preparation work the week before gave her that extra edge.
“We’re all very proud of her and looking forward to seeing what the whole squad can achieve in 2024.”
