On Saturday, Putney hosted the annual GDST Junior Debating Competition, a highly anticipated event that brought together approximately 70 debaters from Years 7-9 across 11 schools. Throughout the day, students engaged in four fiercely competitive rounds, showcasing their impressive skills and knowledge. It was also wonderful to have some of our partner schools present including Ashcroft Technology Academy, St Bedes and Bishops Stortford.

The competition featured thought-provoking motions, such as ‘The house would tax inheritance at 100%,’ ‘This house believes men and women should take equal paternity and maternity leave,’ and ‘This House believes that politicians should be judged on their policies and not their private lives.’

The Putney Debaters delivered outstanding performances at the recent event, showcasing their impressive skills and dedication. Ananya G and Bea C formed a formidable pair, making it to the Gold final where they narrowly missed out on victory due to a close chair call, with half the judging panel supporting their win. Nevertheless, Bea was recognised as the best speaker of the day, while Anaya secured the second-best speaker position. Daphne, Mathilde and Myrtle also made it to the Gold final, a huge achievement for the Y8 team.

Sana M and Darcey T triumphed in the Silver Final, demonstrating their excellence in debate. Austin Z displayed exceptional speaking abilities and secured the fifth-best speaker position, while Apoline also ranked among the top 10 speakers. Both Austin and Apoline advanced to the Silver Final and finished as runners-up. Anya K overcame the challenge of working with an unfamiliar partner and broke into the novice final. Joining her in the novice final were Daphne R and Anya K, who not only reached the final but also earned the titles of best novice speakers of the day.

Athena stepped in to partner a Wimbledon student whose original partner was ill. Se not only debated superbly but made the Wimbledon student (who was the only student from her school in attendance) feel very welcome. Francesca, cutting short on her camping trip, participated in the first round of the competition alongside Daphne, showcasing her commitment to debate.
Alice M, a Year 12 student, not only excelled as a judge but also provided invaluable support and kindness to the younger debaters, ensuring they felt included and valued during the judging process.

It was an exciting event filled with hot debates, great results and a whopping 45 Domino’s pizzas at lunch! Congratulations once again to everyone involved for their outstanding achievements.
