Decoding Classically themed masterpieces

Athena, News, Senior School, Sixth Form, STEM

Year 10 and 12 students studying Classics visited the British Museum and National Gallery for a day of exploration and discovery. The students enjoyed a study session led by a British Museum expert on the famous Parthenon friezes – still the subject of much political and diplomatic debate – and viewed other Greek and Roman artefacts on a self-guided tour.

At the National Gallery the students used their mythological knowledge to decode the meaning of three Classically themed masterpieces: Botticelli’s Venus and Mars, Rubens’ Judgement of Paris and Giordano’s vast depiction of Perseus turning his enemies to stone with the Gorgon’s Head.
