PIE Talk – Becoming a Playwright with Morgan Lloyd Malcolm

Drama, Guests, News, Performance, PIE, Senior School, Sixth Form

Playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm delivered this week’s PIE talk. Morgan explained her journey to becoming a playwright, how she got into theatre, beginning at Goldsmiths, University of London taking up roles in costume design, lighting and sound.

Morgan took her first performance to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002 and has had a meteoric rise since then. One of her most well-known plays is based on the history of 17th-century poet Emilia Bassano, and was performed at the Globe theatre.

After some work on short comedy sketches and writing her first pantomime, Morgan’s first play, The Longings, was performed at Hampstead Studios. Followed shortly by her second play called The Wasp which was featured at the Short Play Festival went on to be performed at the Hampstead Theatre.

For her play about Emilia Bassano, Morgan researched the character and was amazed by her history. Emilia was a poet at the same time as Shakespeare, but her talent went largely unrecognised during her lifetime.

Morgan used a full female cast, crew and creative team as a way to honour Emilia and all female poets.
