Year 8 App Designers – Amazon Competition

Achievements, Community, Design, News, Senior School, STEM

A team of Putney Year 8 students are semi-finalists in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Get It   competition, a programme to encourage girls aged 12-13 into careers in technology.

The programme was introduced at Putney High School to Year 8 students at the year group assembly in September via an app building competition focused on solving issues local to their school or community.

The entire year group worked in teams of 5-7 members in lesson time and then during Computing Club on Wednesdays lunchtimes. From the submitted storyboard designs, seven students across five teams participated in the AWS GetIT Bootcamp at their Shoreditch offices. An exciting day of workshops in design, development and presentation skills had the teams buzzing with inspiration to progress their ideas with prototypes.

After the bootcamp, the teams were busy with research, school surveys and bringing their story-boards to life through wire-frame prototypes. With their final ideas ready for presentation, an Amazon ambassador came into school to watch the final presentations and give feedback on their concepts. Each school was able to submit two teams for the competition, and it was a tough choice as the four design concepts were of a high calibre:

Infinite School – an app for second-hand uniform sales

Litter.Pic – an app to coordinate litter picks for communities and schools

Flora Go – an app to encourage children to spend time outdoors and identify plants and animals through the app.

Heads and Tails – an app to pair sight impaired people with a suitable guide dog.

Keeping in mind, the school and community aspect of the competition – the two teams to represent Putney High were Infinite School – a second hand uniform selling app and Litter.Pic – an app to coordinate litter picks along the river (or other areas).

Right after submission, schools were closed due to Coronavirus but the selection for semi-finalists continued at AWS as scheduled. The competition coordinator was in touch with the results and Putney High had a team in the semi-finals – Infinite Schools!

We are very proud of the level of dedication and effort that the teams invested to produce inspiring apps for the community.
