“English literature at A Level equips you to understand human nature… to put together a compelling argument and to articulate it in a way that fires people’s imaginations.”

Mrs Jeffrey of Putney’s English Department spoke to The Week Schools Guide about the importance of the written word.

“Initiatives include the chance for pupils to create their own poetry anthology and take part in Free Writing Friday, a national campaign launched by children’s laureate, Cressida Cowell where students write freely for 15 minutes. There’s also a writer-in-residence (this year it’s Ros Barber) and an annual poetry festival.
