This year’s UK Senior Mathematics Challenge had an unexpected outcome as a member of Putney’s Year 10, Laila S, tied for ‘Best in School’ in the national sixth form challenge.
The competition is designed to test students’ ability to think in a lateral and original way using their mathematical knowledge. It involves a 1.5 hour multiple choice on all aspects of problem-solving.
Aimed at Years 12 and 13, there are sometimes entrants from Year 11, but this is the first time that we have invited entries from two members of Year 10: Laila S and Ghazal A.”Both students were chosen for their outstanding mathematical ability but it was the first time that Year 10 have been entered at this level – so it was something of an experiment”, explained Head of Maths, Mr Oliver.
Both Year 10 students performed extremely strongly with Laila S tying for ‘Best in School’ with Naya N in Year 12. Naya has hopes to study Aeronautical Engineering at University. Laila still has a year or two to give the matter some thought.
Very well done!
