Putney begins online schooling

Community, General, News, Pastoral, Senior School, Sixth Form

In the face of the COVID-19 outbreak, Putney was forced to close its doors last Friday to all but the children of London’s critical key workers.

Plans for guided home learning had already been in place for some time and since Monday morning, the school community has been coming together online to start their lessons (almost as usual!).

Here are just a few of the fun and creative things that teachers and students have been getting up to in our temporary, virtual school.

Teachers have been finding innovative ways to deliver their lessons from home. This stand-up solution works well!

Mrs Crocombe told us, “We had a great e-theatre trip last night with Year 11 – watching Things I know to be True via Digital Theatre Plus – about 30 of us watching from our living rooms and commenting on Teams. We’re going to be doing this regularly!
“I’m doing another theatre session on Thursday with Year 13 – we’re ‘going’ to watch Catherine Tate and David Tennant in Much Ado About Nothing.”
Teachers have been pairing up some of their Key Stage 3 classes so that each girl has a buddy to work with during lessons. Students have been encouraged to link up with their buddy, either on their iPad or phone, to take part in the usual discussion type activities that they would have in class.
They can also take photos of their work to share or mark to ensure an element of social interaction, helping pupils to learn and problem-solve together.

There have been a raft of innovative and inspiring lessons via Microsoft Teams and some wonderful contributions from the pupils. We’ve even had remote tutor time with a selection of “thunks” (thought provoking questions), mind-bending riddles and even 10 minute yoga sessions. All this plus quizzes and debates as well as normal pastoral care offered by form tutors.
