Celebrating World Book Day at Putney

Putney staff and students celebrated World Book Day with visits from some of our favourite children's authors.

At Putney, we celebrate World Book Day throughout the entire first week of March. Book Week gives pupils more opportunities to meet their favourite authors and share their love of reading and writing.

With a rich history of Putney alumnae going on to become bestselling authors, we are in the business of inspiring the next generation of storytellers. From Sophie Kinsella to Aliya Ali-Afzal, numerous former students have taken the publishing world by storm.

This week, an impressive range of authors have visited Junior School pupils from Vicky Holmes, creator of the bestselling Rainbow Magic and Warrior Cats series to Annelise Gray, author of the popular Circus Maximus books. Pupils were inspired to create their own Polly the Putney High School Fairy, discover the wonder of the elements through story, and took part in an interactive performance bringing new life to favourite nursery rhymes.

While reading and literacy are championed every year at Putney, this year we are joining with schools and organisations around the country to celebrate the National Year of Reading. World Book Day saw the launch of the senior school library’s campaign to encourage the staff and student community to share their favourite books throughout the year.

All senior school students and staff are asked to send in their recommendations which will be connected with readers throughout the year as they search for a new favourite at the library.
