Music Festival 2020

Events, General, Music, News, Senior School, Sixth Form

Putney High School was alive with the sound of music all day yesterday for the annual House Music Festival – one of the highlights of the school musical calendar.

This year, over 120 girls performed, with many playing multiple instruments and entering numerous different categories.

The standard was exceptionally high, as ever, and the commitment from the girls was extremely impressive. A particular highlight was the Pop category, when Years 7-10 came to provide an enthusiastic audience for the performers. It was particularly poignant that a number of the girls chose to perform their own compositions in this category, and their playing was notably emotive as a result.

Congratulations goes to our winning a cappella group, License to Trill with ‘Rumour Has It’ and to Coco A and Rosie T who wowed us with their violin and piano Rachmaninoff duet, deserving winners of the Duet category.

This year we were fortunate to have as our adjudicator, Craig Greene, a respected concert pianist and Director of Music at Stowe School. Of Ciara W, who won in the Advanced Instrumental category, Mr Greene said, “when I arrived today, I honestly wasn’t expecting to see a performance of quite this calibre”.

He also said the String Quintet was the “best chamber music performance he’d ever heard in a school setting”.

We must, of course, make mention of another highlight – the moment everyone had been waiting for, with baited breath  – when the staff took to the stage to perform ABBA’s ‘Super Trouper’.

It was a great arrangement and a really musical performance, replete with some spectacular choreography. As ever, the girls were bowled over by the dulcet tones of Mr Pattie, nothing less than music to their ears.

With the final flourish of the Advanced Instrumental and A Capella groups, the final day of the Music Festival 2020 came to a close.  The Music Department would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the girls performing who made it such a rewarding day, to our esteemed judge and the many staff and parents who came to support.  Next stop – Putney Does Pop!
