Modern Scholarship
Junior School
(Noun) An educational ethos designed by Putney High School which develops pupils who take ownership of their learning, think critically and develop the skills and vision to problem solve, now and in the future.
Through our Modern Scholarship ethos, pupils build skills and confidence. We encourage and inspire pupils to develop the four Cs:
- Collaboration
- Creativity
- Critical Thinking
- Communication
Pupil choice is encouraged, so as she grows, your daughter will have increased opportunity and freedom to explore and apply her learned knowledge, skills and interests.
We champion intellectual agility, wonder and curiosity, teaching pupils to question and explore as they develop into bold, rigorous and critical thinkers.
Leadership
Our Junior School allows every pupil to leap into the driving seat, develop their thinking skills and explore the adventure of learning with independence, excitement, and curiosity. Pupil leaders pave the way for their peers in areas from technology to debating, sports and gardening. Our Digital Leaders support younger years in harnessing technology while our Communications Champions see success in national debating competitions.
Ignite
Our Junior School IGNITE programme promotes innovative thinking in even the youngest children through a series of events and activities, each grounded in enquiry, problem-solving and process-based learning. Inspiring professionals are invited from a broad range of industries to speak with our pupils about their career path. From authors to engineers, Putney pupils are inspired to pursue their passions.
STEM
Putney pupils take ownership of their learning and develop an instinct for curiosity. In STEM, girls build strong foundations in the experimental method and learn how scientists use experiments and observations to answer questions and learn about the world. Pupils learn to ask the big questions and develop their own investigations, relishing challenge and learning to think deeply.
In year 5, pupils display their work in an annual Science Museum where they present pupil-led projects to their peers. The confidence and intelligence of these presentations represents an inspiring display of modern scholarship in action.
Languages
Modern Languages classes at Putney Junior School are a celebration of the intellectual thrill of language learning. K-Lab lessons, named after Steven Krashen, American linguist known for developing the input hypothesis, invite pupils to delve into the delight of learning a language as they play, discover and interact in French and Spanish.
Our annual Mother Tongue Festival inspires pupils to take ownership of their learning as they come together in a celebration of their own – and their peers – home languages.
Girls are encouraged to be ‘intrepid disruptors’, learning from their mistakes and ‘digging deeper’ to solve problems and think for themselves.
