Farewell to Putney’s much loved Roger Carter

Alumnae, Alumnae Events, General, News, Senior School

It was with shock and great sadness that we heard last week of the death of Roger Carter, Putney's much loved, retired Head of Music who taught at the school for almost 22 years.

Looking through the Putney Archives, we found a piece by Julie Sharp, another Putney legend and keen chorister, who wrote on the eve of his retirement, “We will miss his sense of humour. We will miss his harmonies. We will miss his music. We will miss him.”

We send our deepest condolences to his family as tributes continue to pour in.

“So sad. A superb teacher with infectious enthusiasm and so much energy. The choir tour to South Africa was a real highlight of my school years.”

“Some of my fondest memories involved Mr C and the various choirs. An inspirational teacher. He will be missed.”

“Mr Carter’s love of music was infectious. He gave us such incredible opportunities to sing and play around the world from Grahamstown Festival in South Africa to the Albert Hall.”

“He was such an inspirational teacher who encouraged us all to reach musical heights we never thought we could achieve. A true one off! RIP Mr Carter.”
