Debating Round-Up March 2023

Achievements, Arts, Debating, General, News, Senior School, Sixth Form

Putney debaters have been busy over the last few weeks. Lalin O and Zaynab A went up to the Oxford Union to take part in the finals of the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition. They did very well and had a whale of a time running from the Union Debating Chamber to different rooms in around the Union while also trying to plan arguments for the next debate.

Cambridge Schools’ Finals Day, which took place a week later, was, in comparison, a calmer affair (only around half the number of teams made it through) and, again, the two Putney teams – made up of Alice M and Ellie C and Ananya G and Beatrice C – had a successful day. Ananya and Beatrice were especially impressive given that they must have been the youngest team taking part.

A large cohort of Putney debaters went to South Hampstead High School last Thursday for their termly debating competition. A team from Year 8 made up of Anya K and Daphne R fought off competition from the likes of St Paul’s Girls’ School and Ibstock, to be named joint winners of the Junior Strand.

Finally, the official 2023 Debating season came to an end with a rail trip to Durham for a two-day debating competition in the Durham Union. Debaters stayed in Grey College and debated in the Union building. While some teams came close to breaking to the Final, none quite managed it.

We are now looking forward to the GDST Debating Comps next terms which will be held, for the first time ever, live and (for the Junior competition) at Putney! Dr Kiek is expecting wins!
