Building a Business – Entrepreneurship Evening

Careers, Guests, News, Past Events, Senior School, Sixth Form

Have you ever wondered what it takes to build a business from the ground up? Well, last night two successful entrepreneurs came to Putney to explain exactly how they had done just that.

Many thanks to Rebecca Hopkins of Balance Me skincare and Steve Locke of cocktail bar chain, Be at One, who joined us to talk about their experiences building their own successful companies.

When asked whether a business studies course was necessary, they both said not. The important thing was, according to Steve Locke, “to be different and to be better” and most importantly, to learn from the failures along the way.

Rebecca Hopkins, whose early career was at L’Oreal, spoke of how important it was to keep in mind “the Five Ps”: Product, People, Price, Place and Promotion. It was she said, so important to have a “big idea” and to “tell your story – it’s your brand’s biggest asset”.

One of our successful Young Enterprise companies, Kalafi Discos, was there to get tips from the experts, and we were also delighted to welcome back to Putney, alumna, Camille Goodman (class of 2012) whose U2 Tuition company now has a team of 450 Oxbridge graduates offering tutoring and mentoring to students hoping to get into Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
