‘Bare Ocean’ Young Enterprise team success

Achievements, Community, General, Senior School

Congratulations to Year 12's 'Bare Ocean', one of six Young Enterprise companies to go through to the London final which will be judged this week.

Managing Director, Annabella in Year 12 tells us more...

Our company is called Bare Ocean because our aim is to revert our oceans to their natural, bare state by reducing the usage of single use plastics which are polluting our planet.

We have created the EcoBag which provides people with reusable alternatives to common single use plastic products. The bag includes handmade tote bag, beeswax wrap, bamboo straws, coconut bowl, a seed packet and reusable bamboo coffee cup.

We had been working on our product for many months and we finally launched it at the beginning of March. We attended two trade fairs, at Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth and another at Eden Walk, Kingston. We were really pleased with our performance and managed to make sales of £240 across the two events.

At the end of March we entered the 2020 Company of the Year awards. This involved filling out an online report, creating a video presentation and submitting photos of our trade stand.

The report was eight pages long and covered a company overview, our journey, legacy and sustainability and the financial result. Because of the Coronavirus situation the competition is being run digitally this year so we had to create a four minute video presentation summarising the importance of our business, our mission and how we have been working towards our goals.

We then uploaded the video to Youtube and submitted the link alongside the report. Normally each company would set up a trade stand at the competition but as everything was digital this year we sent in photos of our trade stands from trade fairs we had attended earlier in the year, in Kingston and Wandsworth.

Here are some comments from members of the team talking about their experience of the process:

“I have really enjoyed taking part in young enterprise, it has been a great opportunity for me to understand more about the logistics behind creating and running a business as well as allowing me to develop my creative skills through designing our logo and branding. It has also helped me to improve my leadership and teamwork skills. It has been an amazing opportunity that has allowed me to develop many useful business skills while building strong bonds within the team.” -Annabella, Managing Director

“We had some struggles but we managed to overcome them as a team. I really enjoyed having responsibility and being able to make important decisions. It was a very enjoyable and exciting experience.”
-Ruhi, Financial Director

Young enterprise has been a very rewarding experience for me and has improved my skills, especially in terms of communication when selling our product to the general public. I’ve really enjoyed working with everyone as a team and learning more about setting up a business! -Sarisha, Director of Sustainability.
