Barclays Outreach Trip

Careers, News, Trips

On Thursday 1 February, 22 Putney girls attended an outreach day at the Barclays Headquarters in Canary Wharf. A current graduate trainee introduced the day explaining why she was so passionate about encouraging young women into banking, and members of the Internal Audit team and the Head of Graduate Recruitment explained their work, and gave valuable insights into how they recruit interns, trainees and employees. There were also tours of the offices, a chance to see the views of London from the highest floors, a networking event and an amazing lunch in the staff restaurant.

Did you know that Barclays Bank employed the first ever female branch manager and the first female director of a bank? During the visit, Sally Clark, the most senior woman in Barclays and one of the most senior women in banking, spoke to the girls saying,“work out who you are and don’t go and work somewhere where you can’t be yourself.” She is an inspiring and strong advocate for women in leadership and the financial sector, and explained that the image of“pale, male and stale” no longer holds true; Barclays’ graduate programme is now nearly 60% women.
