Senior Curriculum

The Putney curriculum follows a structure which consolidates study over time and provides ample opportunity for cross-curricular learning. Students have access to a wide selection of topics and are supported through their choice of GCSE and A level subjects aligning with their strengths and passions.

We believe that thinking should be “out of the box”, not “tick the box”. Our teachers encourage their students to become inspired learners with inquisitive, original mindsets. As experts in their fields, they share their infectious passion for their subjects to ensure every student is stretched and challenged, but also able to play to her strengths.

Q: What is Modern Scholarship?

A: A forward-thinking approach to academic study which is original and relevant to the modern world. Take ownership of your learning, think critically and develop the skills and the vision to problem-solve, now and in the future.

Modern Scholarship explained

Modern Scholarship requires rigour and analytical skills but also a distinctly entrepreneurial style of thinking. Opportunities to be curious, to question and conjecture begin in the Debating Forum and through the popular Year 7 Badge Challenge and Year 8 BAFTA awards. Students explore new ideas and respond creatively to topical issues through essays and artworks, podcasts and short films.

Through our visiting speaker programme, the Putney Ideas Exchange (PIE), students begin to broaden their outlook, engaging with guests from the world of academia, challenged to think differently and exploring the full gambit of professional careers.

Design Thinking explores innovation, programming and the practical application of technology to solve real world problems. Students brainstorm and design using robots and AI, prototyping and testing – great training for the innovators of tomorrow.

Lessons in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) expand intellectual horizons, introducing political philosophy and lively debate on the function of government and the nature of being.

The Athena Programme offers a customisable plan of self-directed study allowing students to build an “Academic CV” as they research, analyse and discuss their work in a seminar setting, alongside evidenced reports and presentations.

In the Sixth Form, students stretch their intellectual wings drawing links between A Level study and concepts beyond the curriculum. The EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) Electives, Futures sessions and LEAP Lectures challenge perspectives and develop critical thinking as they explore more demanding academic material in preparation for university.

Clubs & Competitions

From MedSoc to Politics Futures and from Olympiads to the History Journal; there are a plethora of competitions, enrichment opportunities and academic clubs to be involved in each week. Prestigious courses in journalism, classics and philosophy are all on offer – a gateway to a lifelong learning journey.

Scholarships & Prizes

Every year, departmental prizes are awarded for exceptional work in particular fields of study. Prestigious external prizes are signposted to those looking for additional challenge, everything from international poetry prizes to Oxbridge essay competitions.

Elsa Maud Plant – Putney’s academic scholarship and travel award is available to students wishing to complete an overseas research project in support of either Modern Languages or Science.

Academic Scholars – Our Academic Scholars meet regularly with members of SLT and sixth form mentors to monitor their progress and discuss their academic goals. Academic scholarships are awarded at 11+ along with scholarships in Music and Sport. Sixth Form scholarships are available in the following categories: Academic, Art, Drama, Design Technology, Music and Sport. Sixth Form Scholarships in Modern Foreign Languages and Science are also available to candidates who have studied with us during Years 7 – 11.

The Athena Programme

The Athena Programme is Putney High School’s unique programme of academic extension which encourages students to pursue scholarship and academia beyond the syllabus in preparation for entry to the top Higher Education institutions.

Available to students in Years 10 – 13, the programme offers a customisable plan of self-directed study and supports them as they learn to think differently and explore their academic passions outside the classroom.

The Athena Programme is an integral part of the academic provision for Academic Scholars but is also available to any Putney student looking for extra stretch and challenge.

Weekly PIE (Putney Ideas Exchange) talks provide access to diverse leading business experts and alumnae. Guest speakers share their life lessons and experiences with the students giving them opportunity to understand subjects from unique perspectives, to think about their future careers and to challenge themselves with intellectual debates and new ideas.

Year 8 BAFTA Awards

The Year 8 BAFTA Awards are an opportunity to think outside the box and respond to an issue in an entirely new way.

The challenge is split into 5 award categories, designed to provide pupils with the opportunity to explore their creativity and work on a project independently and in a style of their choice.

Beyond the Curriculum

We have a cross-curricular approach to learning and offer a co-curricular programme designed to motivate you beyond the passing of exams. We want you to leave Putney educated in the broadest sense: high achieving, future-ready and with the skills and confidence to succeed in your ambitions.

Debating and Oracy

Anyone who has ever watched a TED talk will appreciate how very inspirational a good speaker can be. The most effective speakers succeed in getting their messages across because they are great communicators – they have mastered the art of oracy – a skill taught at Putney High School.

Debate club and events such as Speak Week gives students the opportunity to speak out. To express their opinions coherently and crucially, to take responsibility for their own ideas.

Putney’s Debating Forum provides a central hub where students can hone their skills.

Medical Society

Have you ever wondered what a future career as a doctor would be like? Medical Society offers an insight to what life in a medical profession would be like from university and careers information to discussing ethical dilemmas and solutions.

There are also workshops and classes to participate in from dissection to learning First Aid. These workshops can also cater for groups that include students from mixed year groups to encourage collaborative working.

Medical professionals also visit Putney to present and share their real life experiences.

History Podcast

The History Podcast invites pupils and staff to use their voice by sharing their opinions on various historical events. Topics brought up within the podcast are not usually based on parts of the curriculum, this is to encourage students to be inquisitive and broaden their knowledge of past events through a fun and collaborative media platform.
